Institutional Research Analyst – Office of Institutional Research and Strategic

The Office of Institutional Research and Strategic Analysis (IRSA) is looking for an individual who will support the unit’s mission of providing accurate and timely data to inform decision-making on campus. IRSA is enhancing our reporting and business intelligence capabilities and is searching for a candidate with proven experience creating Power BI dashboards and reports for organizations. During the first 6–9 months, the focus will be on learning the institution’s data structures, developing Power BI dashboards, and supporting colleagues who are also working in Power BI. After this initial period, dashboard development will continue, with additional responsibilities from the broader scope of the role gradually being incorporated. A review of applications will occur no later than mid-July.

Develop processes to share large amounts of summary data with internal and external audiences (50%).

  • Create and maintain Power BI dashboards
  • Evaluate current and future data needs and implement procedures and best practices to ensure data quality
  • Use innovative solutions to solve problems and modify solutions
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and deliver actionable insights
  • Consult with clients to understand needs and develops tools to collect data or delivers data reports with requested information

Fulfill internal reporting and research needs to support academic unit policy and decision making (20%).

  • Write queries to extract and gather data
  • Synthesize and analyze data from multiple sources
  • Determine the most appropriate way to display data
  • Create reports and presentations
  • Present findings to management, researchers, and stakeholders

Assist with internal and external reporting such as Fact Books, benchmarking studies, required federal and state reporting, data exchanges, and ad-hoc requests. May include gathering data, writing scripts & procedures, performing exploratory analysis, and summarizing results (15%).

Office Support and Development (15%).

  • Aid in data governance efforts such as assisting with data quality monitoring and training users of our data
  • Assist with data systems maintenance
  • Knowledge sharing – proactively teaching and supporting colleagues

Required Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Masters degree in higher education, educational research, behavioral sciences, business, computer science or related fields plus 3-5 years analytical / reporting experience

OR

  • Bachelors degree with 5-7 years of relevant analytical / reporting experience

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ability to write complex SQL queries to extract, manipulate, and analyze datasets
  • Expertise in using Power BI (and other MS technologies) to create reporting solutions
  • Ability to apply strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to communicate well both orally and in writing
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:

  • Analytical / reporting experience in an institution of higher education
  • Knowledge of the field of institutional research
  • Understanding of, and experience working within, MS Fabric

Working at the University of Tennessee – Knoxville

Work Location: In-office (Knoxville, TN) with opportunity for some days/week working remotely.

Compensation:

UT market range: MR12 (Find more information on the UT Market Range structure here)

Anticipated hiring range: $65,000 – 75,000
