We are hiring a VP, Underwriting and Reinsurance who will lead our risk assessment and underwriting strategy with precision and expertise.
About The Role
In this role, you’ll be a hands-on leader driving the vision, strategy, and execution of our underwriting function. You’ll oversee the team, innovate processes, and align underwriting strategies with SafeLease’s growth objectives.
To drive our mission forward, this role will:

Lead the Underwriting Team: Manage and mentor a high-performing team of underwriters, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability

Master risk analysis: Evaluate complex risk factors to determine optimal pricing and coverage terms that fuel growth without compromising stability

Collaborate strategically: Partner with Sales, Ops, and Product teams to craft underwriting strategies

Stay ahead of the curve: Monitor industry regulations, market trends, and emerging risks to keep SafeLease at the forefront

Drive Innovation: Develop and champion innovative underwriting policies, tools, and workflows to enhance efficiency, scalability, and competitive advantage

Ensure compliance: Uphold regulatory and company standards, maintaining audit-ready documentation and coordinating with partners to align on compliance requirements
About You
You have extensive experience in commercial property underwriting and a proven ability to drive transformative outcomes in risk management. You distill complex underwriting challenges into clear, actionable strategies, inspiring your team and stakeholders with your decisive leadership and commitment to excellence.
You’ll bring these skills and strengths:

10+ years of experience in a commercial P&C insurance environment and/or 7+ years of property underwriting experience. Prior surplus lines experience is a big plus

Deep expertise in risk assessment methodologies, pricing models, and coverage structures

Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen eye for detail and a strategic mindset

Strong negotiation and relationship management abilities, fostering trust with internal teams and external partners

Proactive leadership with a collaborative spirit—you know when to take charge and when to empower others

Comfort navigating state-by-state regulations and licensing processes, ensuring compliance at every turn

Desire to work in an in-person or hybrid from our beautiful downtown Austin office
